Beggars in Shanghai Most disagreeable was when, on the way to school, we had to walk around beggars on the sidewalk frozen or starved to death overnight.

Religion/Politics I'm always asking: "What's the difference between religion and superstition? And between political fund-raising and bribe soliciting?"

World Economics Around the world, the poor gets poorer and languishes without hope while the rich gets richer and lavishes without guilt.

Another Kind of Pollution The visual pollution generated by commercial billboards is the kind which a civilized society should never have tolerated.

Eulogy to Tony I told Gloria about my brother Tony before they got married, that she had a saint on her hands. Latter events, including Father's as well as Gloria's long illness, proved that I did not exaggerate.

'54 Plymouth Coupe The detective told us that the body of the murder victim was transported in the very same car we rented for our honeymoon. Of course, the cops found my name and address in the suspect's apartment.

Chang Zhou Hotel, Shanghai Looking down at the rear garden from our room I saw a bunch of rowdy Japanese soldiers playing a game with a smallish ball, oversized gloves and mean-looking bats. I did not realize that I had just witnessed Japan's national sport: Baseball.

Trevanian: "He felt utter disdain for... the merchants who are responsible for all that is kitsch, that is change without progress, and that is consumption without use."

Massimo Vignelli: "The life of a designer is a life of fight: fight against ugliness."

Confessions of a Split Mind is a compendium of selected drawings, philosophical dialogues, and two myths from Kiritsis's personal journal. Collectively, they capture an internal conflict between differing aspects of the conceptual self, which plays out in every one of us. For the author, this phenomenon takes the form of an ongoing war between science and esoteric spirituality. In the author's idiosyncratic inner world, the former discipline is personified by a male character known as the Unknown Pilot and the latter by a female character, Solim. The integrated conscious self also appears in the guise of a character named Olyn.
These three entities bide their time grappling with the big questions in life and arguing over the veracity of existing interpretations: Is it possible to explain genius-level creativity through contemporary scientific models? What exactly are the "voices" that psychosis sufferers hear? What is precognition, and what does it mean for a linear, materialistic model of the universe? Does free will exist? Have we underestimated the powers of the placebo and the mind? How much do we really know about the brain? Is it really like a computer as computational and connectionist models would have us believe? How therapeutic are creative pursuits? Does anything survive the death of the human body?
Each chapter deals with a different topic and is illustrated by thematic drawings. Many of the conundrums and life mysteries expounded in the broader narrative are represented visually in a separate section in the middle of the book, entitled "Interlude: A Journey through the Split Mind."
The book begins and ends with the narration of personal myths whose purpose is to convey images of an ostensibly paradoxical world as it would appear to our logical operative cognition and the either-or logic we pride ourselves on, hold aloft, and deem infallible.

Follow along with Mrs. Moomoo and Brianna as they go on another adventure. Today the happy twosome meet a young boy named Tommy, who has autism. French Fries in the Park is a great source for discussion, whether in a classroom setting or at home, that will help children understand what autism is and how it affects some children. The story line is simple with charming full-color illustrations on each page that will easily captivate younger children. This story encourages children to be mindful and patient of the differences children with autism have, but also to recognize the similar wants and likes these children have that are the same as their own.

What is autism?
Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life. The result of a neurological disorder that impacts the functioning of the brain, autism impacts the normal development of the brain in the areas of social interaction and communication skills (The Autism Project).

As with all of the books in the Brianna & Mrs. Moomoo series, a percentage of all sales go to help support local children's charities. 10% of all sales for French Fries in the Park will go to help fund The Autism Project. May they continue to support the children with ASD and their families for many years to come.

"JM Sheridan created a warm and welcoming story with endearing characters that introduces young children to the idea that their friends, siblings, cousins and/or neighbors with autism really are more like them than not, just like their other friends. It provides opportunity for adults to describe differences in a non-judgmental manner in language young children will understand."
Joanne G.
Most times tennis players and athletes in general finish the competition unhappy about their performance. They feel that the potential was there, but a hidden force prevented them from achieving a "feel-good" performance. Performances, however, are never usually black and white. Most times athletes feel as though they were going through flows, flash-in/flash-out phases. Falls during performance are conventionally defined "slumps" and are among the most hated between athletes, above all when they feel that the main reason for slumps is not due to technical, tactical or athletic flash-outs but rather to the mental components of the sport activity.

In The Tennis Brain you will:
-Journey inside the processes and functions of the human brain.
-Find a neuroscientific based evidence for theories on the mind and conscious processes.
-Discover why the game of tennis is so prone to mind influences.
-Understand how the mind processes influence tennis game specific situations.
-Learn how to synchronize brain, body and mind for best tennis in match performance.

BOOK ENDORSEMENTS

This work by Federico Di Carlo is a cornerstone among the contemporary research on cognitive neuroscience. The reader is introduced to the exploration and a step by step understanding of the brain and mind mechanisms. Through a fascinating journey in the world of tennis, the author motivates the reader to discover and change wrong behaviours in a positive way. This is a complete manual, useful to both tennis professionals and fans, as well as to anyone aspiring to achieve better results in the game of life.

-Renzo Ardiccioni, Associate Professor of Communication, Universit du Maine, France

Drawing upon a great number of studies as well as on the author's personal experience, Tennis Brain brings together neurosciences and tennis practice, challenging the readers to critically reconsider some of their habits and beliefs. Di Carlo summarises the extensive research produced in the last three decades and makes it accessible to a wider audience, bringing our understanding of key mental aspects of tennis out of the realm of empirical opinions and into the realm of science and knowledge. Tennis Brain can actually guide the readers to develop their own critical thinking and to learn to improve.

-Alessandro Bruinen Serio PhD, Founder of RISED (Research for Integrative and Sustainable Development)

Since the first time we met, I was really impressed with Di Carlo well founded opinion, genuine love and immense enthusiasm for a "neuroscientific driven tennis" which comes out from every single page of The Tennis Brain. Starting from a presentation of the structural and physiological mechanisms of the nervous system and the psychological assets of the mind, Federico Di Carlo uses the "tennis court" to change the tennis player mind to a positive thinking and correct competitive mentality. For scientific consistency, I compared my thinking on the book with other readers and I received a similar feedback. The Tennis Brain actually might represent a benchmark in the developing field of cognitive neuroscience applied to sport coaching.

-Prof. Salvatore Guccione Department of Drug Sciences University of Catania
