A wing nut, or wingnut, features two large opposing "wings," that can be easily tightened and loosened by hand. A nut made from stamped sheet metal with wings of moderate height and a larger bearing surface than other wing nuts. They are generally used on applications that are frequently assembled and disassembled, such as on access panels, adjustable furniture, marine hardware, or other places where torque greater than that achieved with finger pressure is not needed. Stamped wing nuts are more economical than the cold-forged style but not as strong.
