As freight cars grew taller, observing a train from the cupola of a caboose became increasingly difficult. In the wooden car era, another problem with cupola cabooses was sagging roofs. In an effort to solve these problems, the Akron, Canton & Youngstown railroad introduced the bay window caboose in 1923. (In fact, however, bay windows had been used on New York & Harlem Railroad passenger cars as far back as the 1850s, to enable conductors to better anticipate station arrivals.) In 1930 the Baltimore & Ohio became the first railroad to adopt the bay window style as its standard caboose; it never purchased another cupola model. During the same decade, the Milwaukee Road and the Northern Pacific built substantial bay window fleets. But it was immediately after World War II that the bay window design became widespread, as car heights increased significantly and cupolas became less and less useful. As with diesels and other modern freight cars, these postwar bay window cabooses were part of the shift away from customized, railroad-specific locos and cars toward standardized designs produced in large quantities on efficient assembly lines. Key builders of bay window cabooses included International Car Company and American Car & Foundry.
MTH 40-1002 RealTrax O-31 Standard Curved Track- Solid Rails. It takes 8 sections to make a complete circle. Realtrax is simply the easiest O Gauge track system ever manufactured. Featuring solid metal rails strong enough to stand on and a built-in roadbed for a realistic appearance ensures that a RealTrax layout will last for years while sporting a realistic appearance not found in other O Gauge track systems. RealTrax incorporates built-in track bed joiners and long-lasting sprung- metal electrical connectors that make assembling RealTrax literally a snap. Because the roadbed is solid, RealTrax is perfect for temporary carpet based layouts. The built-in roadbed prevents any dirt from staining your carpet and it comes apart so easily that your temporary layout can be disassembled in minutes. While the RealTrax system employs solid nickel-silver rails that won't rust or oxidize in an outdoor environment, the plastic roadbed and rail ties are constructed of ABS plastic that can be compromised outdoors. Essentially, ABS plastic is not designed to withstand extreme temperature swings and can distort (in high heat) or crack in extreme cold. In addition, the plastic will tend to fade in color since it has not been treated with UV resistant paint. As a result, we do not recommend that RealTrax be used outdoors.

Manufacturer: MTH
Model Number: 40-1002
Years Manufactured: 1997 - 2000

Scale/Era: O Modern
Model Type: Track/Switches/Etc.

On its customer Web site, the Union Pacific Railroad characterizes a gondola as an ?extremely sturdy open design? for carrying ?rugged unfinished commodities?; its ?large flat interior design with side walls? is described as ?more flexible than a flat car.? These qualities make the modern gondola particularly popular with the steel industry, for transportation of loose materials like scrap metal, waste, coke, and slag as well as finished products like iron or steel plate, pipe, structural steel, and rails for railroad track. Other commodities commonly shipped in these versatile cars include mineral ores, granite slabs, gravel, logs, lumber, railroad ties, and even prefabricated railroad track, also known as ?panel track.? Until the advent of specialized coil cars in the 1960s, another popular load for gondolas was coiled sheet metal, usually steel, on its way from mills to manufacturers of stamped metal items from car parts to appliances. As depicted on this model, specialized covers ? similar to the covers later used on dedicated coil cars ? protected the raw metal from the elements during transit. Brackets on the covers provided a lifting point for an overhead crane and also allowed the covers to be stacked on top of each other when not in use. The name ?gondola? actually predates railroads. In the early 1800s, utilitarian flat-bottomed boats with low sides, used to transport coal down the Potomac River to the Washington D.C. area, were called gondolas as a spoof on the much fancier Venetian gondolas. Similarly shaped coal-carrying cars on early railroads earned the same moniker. As more specialized cars were invented for coal service, the gondola evolved into the general-purpose car it is today.
This is MTH 30-74742 O MP Boxcar. Box car, Missouri Pacific. Car number: 16267. The 40? steel box car so familiar to model railroaders was a product of the 1930s. Wood box cars, which were built into the World War I era, and early steel cars were largely non-standardized, with details varying from railroad to railroad. The move toward standardization began with American Railway Association (ARA) designs of 1923 and 1932. It culminated in the 1937 AAR boxcar, which was adopted by railroads from coast to coast and built in the tens of thousands. (The AAR (American Association of Railroads) was and still is the successor to the ARA.)

While the original paint schemes were usually drab variations on standard box car red, new schemes in the 1950s and later brought color back to the American freight train. Our models replicate many of the most fondly remembered paint schemes seen on these cars.

High quality, traditionally sized RailKing Freight Cars provide detailed bodies and colorful paint schemes for the O Gauge railroader.
This is MTH 80-2173-0 GP35 DCC Ready UP #756. GP-35 diesel (DCC ready), Union Pacific. Cab number: 756. Produced from 1963 to 1966, the GP35, along with its six-axle SD35 sibling, marked both an end and a beginning. They were the last road diesels to use the EMD 567 motor that had powered switchers, F-units, and Geeps since 1939 (so named because each cylinder displaced 567 cubic inches). For the horsepower race of the 1960s, EMD tweaked the 567 to a turbocharged V-16 delivering 2500 hp. That was it for the 567, however, and in 1966 the baton was passed to the more powerful model 645. But while the 35 line diesels ushered out an old motor, they inaugurated a new look. Their angled cab roofs and the clean, squared-off lines of their car bodies established the look of EMD power for the next three decades.

Introduced to compete with General Electric's landmark U25B, which had ushered in the second generation of diesel power, the GP35 outsold the U-Boat nearly three to one. There was a strong market for new power in the mid-1960s because the first-generation diesels that had vanquished steam were wearing out. While first-generation rosters had often been a hodgepodge of manufacturers and models as railroads experimented with the new technology, by 1960 Alco, EMD, and GE were the only manufacturers left standing - and Alco would soon throw in the towel. As a result, virtually every major U.S. railroad became a GP35 customer and over 1300 engines were sold in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

In what we believe is the finest, ready-to-run HO GP-35 diesel to ever be produced, HO modelers will find the best combination of detail, realism, and performance of any 1/87 scale GP35. Added-on detail parts include windshield wipers, metal see-thru body grilles, lift rings, metal grab irons and handrails, see-thru rooftop fan housings, and brake cylinders, air pipes, and swing hangers on our super-detailed Blomberg trucks.

Our highly detailed model includes a broader range of features than you'll find on any other HO sc

Manufacturer: MTH
Model Number: 80-2173-0

Scale/Era: HO Modern
Model Type: Diesel Loco
