Co-founded in 1956 by visionary teacher Robert Joffrey and dancer Gerald Arpino, The Joffrey Ballet began as a DIY company of six dancers touring the United States in a borrowed station wagon but quickly grew into one of the world's most exciting and prominent ballet companies. Aggressive touring took the Company from school auditoriums across America's Heartland, to the White House at Jacqueline Kennedy's invitation, and on to Russia for a month-long tour during the height of the Cold War, and beyond. "Joffrey: Mavericks Of American Dance" weaves a wealth of rare archival footage and photographs along with interviews featuring former and current Joffrey star dancers, showing the full history of the Company from its founding to the present. Narrated by Tony(R) and Emmy(R) Award winner Mandy Patinkin and directed by Bob Hercules ("Bill T. Jones: A Good Man"), the film features rare excerpts from many seminal Joffrey works including "Astarte", "Trinity and Billboards", as well as breakthrough collaborations with choreographers Twyla Tharp ("Deuce Coupe"), Kurt Jooss ("The Green Table") and Leonide Massine ("Parade").

12-Page Collectible Booklet, Full Dress Rehearsal of The Green Table Ballet, "Making-of" Featurette, Deleted Scenes.

Subtitles: English (Closed Captioned).

New York City has long been regarded as the heart of the American art movement, but near the end of the 1940s, as the post-war rise of Abstract Expressionism became the new wave of painting , a small but determined band of painters, curators, and collectors on the West Coast were determined to make themselves known. Filmmaker Morgan Neville examines the rise of the Los Angeles art scene and how it brought a new and vigorously American slant to contemporary painting in the documentary The Cool School. Neville profiles Walter Hopps and Irving Blum, owners of the Ferus Gallery, which championed the new school of Los Angeles art; sculptors Ed Kienholz and Larry Bell; and painters Ed Ruscha, John Altoon, and Billy Al Bengston, all of whom were championed by the Ferus Gallery; architect Frank Gehry, whose ideas dovetailed with those of the new L.A. artists; and Dennis Hopper and Dean Stockwell, actors and Hollywood bohemians whose love of the new L.A. art (and willingness to buy pieces) provided crucial support for a struggling movement. Jeff Bridges serves as narrator. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide.

Walter Hopps on "Walter Hopps, Hopps, Hopps" by Ed Kienholz, The World of Ed Kienholz, Ferus artists reunion.
